“Welcome to Enchanted Ink, Rivelle Realm’s one and only magical bookshop.” Kaya Ikko, the bookseller, dipped into a bow, her black tunic fluttering around her. “I’m ready.”Ī set of bright, spectacled brown eyes peeped out from a teetering stack of books at the counter in the center. I tightened my hands around the straps of my knapsack and summoned up a smile.

“Are you ready, Eva?” Mother nudged my shoulder. Or, at least, I hoped it was the end of all that. Today was my last day as just an Apprentice Witch, the last few moments of being the unreliable Eva who summoned heads of cabbage instead of flowers or got a sunburn instead of calling down rain. The scent of ink and freshly printed paper swirled invitingly in the air as I followed my parents into the bookshop. The bell above the door chimed, and magic tingled at my fingertips. Eva must conjure up all of the magic, bravery, and cleverness she can muster or Auteri and her dreams of becoming a witch will wash away with the storm.

Only, Eva's bit of magic may not be enough when the biggest magical storm in history threatens the town she's grown to love. She may have more blood than magic, but her "semi-magical fixes" repair the lives of the townspeople in ways they never could have imagined. So Eva comes up with a plan: set up a magical repair shop to aid Auteri and prove she's worthy. When she lands in the tranquil coastal town of Auteri, the residents expect a powerful witch, not a semi-magical girl. And to add insult to injury, whenever she overuses her magic, she falls asleep. She summons heads of cabbage instead of flowers and gets a sunburn instead of calling down rain.

The only problem? Eva only has a pinch of magic. Three: Fly home by broomstick, the easiest of tricks. Two: Live there for one moon, don't leave too soon. For most young witches and wizards, it's a simple enough test: If she doesn't, she'll lose her magic forever. Sometimes all you need is a pinch of magic…Įva Evergreen is determined to earn the rank of Novice Witch before her thirteenth birthday.
